World Meningitis Day

Oct 5 is observed globally to raise awareness about meningitis, a disease in which the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord become swollen. The infection is commonly caused by viruses or bacteria. It is important to determine the cause of meningitis because treatment varies depending on the cause.

The campaign’s theme “Advocacy and Engagement” is a part of the WHO’s Roadmap to Eliminate Meningitis by 2030. World Meningitis Day seeks to increase public and political awareness of meningitis and its consequences.
