The meningitis belt of West Africa has been hit again with an outbreak of this deadly disease.
Every year this region experiences these outbreaks which are far widespread and deadly than other areas of the world. To combat these outbreaks, WHO (World Health Organization) and other governmental agencies actively works with local governments and health care worker to provide vaccines and education. This has decreased the spread of the different serogroups of meningitis, but large outbreaks still occur in this region. The strategy is to make certain that enough vaccine is available and to develop effective systems to identify outbreaks before they spread out of control. The West African meningitis belt will remain a region where health providers will need to remain both alert and proactive if meningitis outbreaks in the area are to be controlled.
