Gemma McGee, 24 year old from Longford, died from meningococcal septicaemia within 36 hours of falling ill.
Dr Owen MacEneaney, who performed an autopsy, said “ MenW was fatal in around 10% of cases while 30% of infections presented as septicaemia without meningitis”. Ms McGee’s family’s life had been turned upside down as a result of Gemma “dying in the most horrific manner from a vaccine preventable disease.” They have claimed improved care and greater public awareness are still needed on the dangers of a particularly lethal strain of MenW.
