Some parents have indicated that Nova Scotia lacks education to increase awareness about meningococcal disease, which could have prevented the deaths of their children.
Health officials are now launching a campaign to educate postsecondary students about the disease and some Nova Scotia universities recently amended their student health plans to cover the cost of the vaccine. Young adults living in military barracks or close living quarters such as dormitories are at increased risk of contracting the rare but serious disease.
