A vaccination campaign at the University of Nottingham and Leicester has been successful in raising the number of first year students vaccinated for MenACWY from 31% to 71%.
Some incoming students refused to be vaccinated, but a significant majority agreed to be protected. Their decision drastically reduces the potential spread of meningitis among the vulnerable population of college age students. This campaign showed that giving information to incoming students and offering free vaccination is an approach that can be highly successful.
