Matt Collino, then 19, was in his second month during his first year at university when he fell ill.
At first, the university’s doctor thought Matt had flu. He got worse & was taken to the hospital. He spent four days in intensive care and two weeks in neurological wards. He couldn’t walk or speak initially and his eyesight was also affected.
With intense rehabilitation following his bout of meningococcal meningitis, he was able to return to university later that year and went on to complete his degree.
Mrs Collino said: “I’m keen to get the message out there and encourage everyone eligible to have the vaccines available to protect themselves and also know the sign and symptoms of meningitis.”
