The city of West Hollywood in California is alerting their citizens to be aware that meningitis is a deadly and contagious disease.
The recommendation is, “Don’t wait and make certain that you are vaccinated against meningitis”. Nine cases of meningococcal disease have been reported so far this year in Los Angeles County. The disease has been particularly prevalent among the male gay community. Meningitis is more difficult to catch that the common cold, but it is far more deadly. It is spread by close contact and exposure to mucus and salvia. The concern has caused the Los Angeles LGBT Center to even offer free vaccinations to their high risk community.
