Fungal Meningitis

Three Americans thought to have contracted fungal meningitis from a cosmetic surgery clinic in Mexico have died.

Lauren Robinson, 29, was one of them, only started developing meningitis symptoms like headache, a few months later. After several hospital trips, doctors identified the cause of her symptoms as fungal meningitis.

According to Centers for Disease Prevention (CDC), fungal meningitis can develop after a fungal infection is accidentally introduced during a medical or surgical procedure, or spreads from somewhere else in the body to the brain or spinal cord. Ars Technica states, “Fusarium fungi are naturally found in the environment (organic matter, soil, and water) and have been known to contaminate pharmaceutical products made improperly”.
