The Department of Public Health Mid-West is investigating a ‘single case of confirmed meningococcal disease in Limerick’.

Following the death of the youth, close contacts are offered prophylactic treatment. People are encouraged to recognize the signs and symptoms including but not limited to severe headaches, fever, vomiting, drowsiness, discomfort from bright light, neck stiffness and rash, Get medical help immediately.

The Director of the Department of Health Mid-West Dr Mai Mannix stated, “Meningococcal disease tends to occur most commonly and with under-fours. There is a smaller peak in the late teen ages, it’s important for that age to be aware. Also, for small children to get their vaccinations because a number of them do protect against meningococcal disease”.
