Teenagers are a high risk group of contracting Meningococcal Meningitis but new data released shows low awareness of meningitis & vaccines among UK teenagers.
The new MenACWY vaccination programme was introduced for teenagers in 2015 but only around one third of school leavers in 2016 had taken up the vaccine.
Meningitis and septicaemia can develop suddenly and progress rapidly. Students should be alert to the symptoms and seek medical attention urgently if they experience some of the symptoms.
