There has always been a question why some people are more susceptible to meningitis than other people.
Research in Sweden has shown that the people who die from meningitis or have severe disabilities probably have been infected with a mutated strain of the disease. It further established that some people’s immune systems have a hidden vulnerability to meningitis at the molecular level. These people’s immune systems aren’t able to defend their bodies against the Neisseria Meningitis bacterium. That’s why even though most people’s immune systems can defend them from meningitis, a small group of people have no defense. Once again, this illustrate why vaccination is so important for protecting individuals against meningitis.
