Medicine and scientific discovery is amazing.
Lisa Craig, a professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada is working to fight meningitis at its roots. Neisseria Meningitides binds to and disrupts healthy cells of the blood-brain barrier. It then is able to sneak across the blood-brain barrier. It causes inflammation in the tiny cells that supply oxygen to the brain and cause devastating illness or even death. Knowing how meningitis attacks the cells around the brain can enable researchers to develop drugs which will interfere with the meningitis pathogens and disrupt their ability to endanger the brain. This can help in better treatment and even elimination of this deadly disease.
