There is now an effective and approved vaccination for meningitis B.
Meningitis B is a deadly strain of bacterial meningitis that kills more than 100 people per year in the United States. The people dying from Meningitis B are typically young and otherwise healthy individuals. Although other strains of meningitis have required vaccines that must be administered prior to young people attending institutions of higher learning, the Men B vaccine has just recently been approved by the CDC and is not yet required. This is a case where the legislative process has fallen behind the medical advancement. It is now time to add Men B to the required vaccinations that our children must have in order to attend institutions of higher learning.
