Continental Contagion

It’s a new year and more outbreaks of meningitis are occurring in the area of sub-Sharan Africa.

This area of the world has a particularly frequency of meningitis cases every year.  The outbreaks happen so often that this region has the dubious distinction of being known as the “meningitis belt”.  Every year, thousands of sub-Saharan are killed or maimed by this devastating disease.  There are vaccinations that protect against meningitis and as the article states, “Immunization is the only rational approach to the control of meningococcal disease”.  Since the disease progresses rapidly we all need to be vaccinated so that we can have the maximum protection.
