Jessica Elkins, a beloved cheerleader and freshman at Athens High School died suddenly in 2007 due to meningitis.

Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks recently joined the Elkins family to mark Sept. 23 as Meningitis Awareness Day in Athens. The family hopes everyone will take time to learn about the symptoms and vaccinations related to meningitis, to protect their loved ones from meningococcal disease.
